Big Cuts Loom for Financially Ailing Cooper Green Mercy in Alabama

The Jefferson County Commission approved a budget for fiscal year 2013, and the county-owned Cooper Green Mercy Hospital in Birmingham, Ala., is expected to face major cuts, according to a WBRC report.

County Commissioner David Carrington said in the report that Cooper Green had a staff budget of roughly $36 million. That total will be slashed by more than 30 percent to $25 million this upcoming year, meaning that roughly 250 hospital employees could lose their jobs.

In August, the County Commission also voted to close inpatient services at Cooper Green.
