5 weeks later, Akorn's closure racks up 14 swelling drug shortages

Some drug shortages have worsened because of the closure of Gurnee, Ill.-based Akorn Operating Co., according to the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists. 

The drug shortages that increased in severity are: 

1. Adenosine injection

2. Albuterol inhalation solution

3. Chlorothiazide sodium injection

4. Fluorescein sodium injection

5. Tropicamide 1% ophthalmic

6. Hydromorphone hydrochloride injection

7. Lidocaine HCl 2% topical jelly

8. Lorazepam

9. Midazolam injection

10. Ofloxacin ophthalmic

11. Orphenadrine citrate injection

12. Polymyxin B and trimethoprim sulfates ophthalmic

13. Ropivacaine injection

14. Sufentanil

Six other drugs are at high risk of falling into shortage, according to the End Drug Shortages Alliance: 

1. Cyclopentolate ophthalmic

2. Hydroxyamphetamine and tropicamide ophthalmic

3. Levofloxacin ophthalmic 

4. Methadone injection

5. Phenylephrine ophthalmic

6. Tetracaine injection
