Toddler denied transplant to receive kidney after meeting with Emory officials

The toddler whose kidney transplant was postponed after his father violated parole will receive a kidney transplant, according to The Atlanta Journal Constitution.

The toddler was set to receive a kidney from his father the first week in October but the transplant was postponed after Anthony Dickerson was arrested for a parole violation Sept. 28. After Mr. Dickerson's arrest, officials from Atlanta-based Emory Healthcare told the family Mr. Dickerson had to comply with his parole for 90 days before they could perform the transplant, effectively postponing the operation until January.

After experiencing public backlash from the decision, officials from Emory Healthcare met with the parents to discuss options for the toddler.

According to Mawali Davis, the attorney representing the family, Emory representatives will now do everything they can to expedite the surgery.

Physicians are estimating the toddler will be healthy enough to receive the transplant in about two weeks, after he completes a round of antibiotics, according to Fox 5 Atlanta.

The toddler, A.J. Burgess, was hospitalized Oct. 29 after he contracted pneumonia and peritonitis, an abdominal inflammation caused by a bacterial infection. He underwent surgery to implant a new port for dialysis and had blood transfusions.

A.J. left Children's Healthcare of Atlanta Nov. 8, after spending more than a week at the hospital.
