Child temporarily denied transplant surgery after father's arrest hospitalized

A toddler whose kidney transplant surgery was postponed after his father violated parole was hospitalized, according to The Washington Post.

Attorney Mawuli Davis, who represents the toddler's family, told the publication 2-year-old A.J. Burgess was hospitalized Sunday with peritonitis, an abdominal inflammation condition caused by a bacterial or fungal infection.

The attorney told The Washington Post A.J. is currently undergoing antibiotic treatment.

The toddler was slated to have a kidney transplant, donated by his father, at Atlanta-based Emory University Hospital early this month. However, the operation was suspended indefinitely when his father, Anthony Dickerson, 26, was arrested in September for parole violation.

The academic medical center told the Burgess family it would reevaluate Mr. Dickerson for transplant eligibility in January 2018.

Meanwhile, Carmellia Burgess, A.J.'s mother, has created an online petition calling for her son's operation to take place.
