University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics Revises Construction Plans

Madison-based University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics revealed plans to build two new floors to the American Family Children's Hospital for $13 million instead of building within existing space.

The hospital needs approval for this expansion from the Village of Shorewood Hills, where the hospital is located, and the UW board of regents. The governing board of UW Hospital and Clinics initially approved plans to build 26 critical care beds, including a 14-bed surgical neonatal intensive care unit, in existing space. New data on patient need, space and construction costs caused the board to re-evaluate its plans.

The board decided to add two new floors, with the NICU on the top floor, to provide a safer and less disruptive transition for the sickest patients. The patients would not have to move to a temporary unit in the adult hospital during any future construction, which would have cost an additional $2.3 million.

The proposed expansion is the latest addition to a 10-year, $32 million strategic plan to increase the children's hospital's bed count from 61 to 87. The hospital will begin building a pediatric imaging suite, a cardiac catheterization lab, space for interventional radiology and two new operating rooms later this year. Construction of the two additional floors would begin this August with a completion date of April 2014.
