Surgeons Leave Tampa General Hospital for Competitor, Bring 18 Staffers With Them

Two prominent surgeons have left Tampa (Fla.) General Hospital, severing their ties with the University of South Florida, to establish a new program at Florida Hospital Tampa, according to a Tampa Bay Times report.

Alexander Rosemurgy, MD, has been with Tampa General for 27 years, and Sharona Ross, MD, for 11 years. The surgeons specialize in digestive disorders and pancreatic cancer. They will take 18 staff members with them to FHT, according to the report.

The surgeons declined to criticize Tampa General or the university, only saying they are making the move to advance research and improve patient care.

"We weren't going to be able to grow where we were, and we wanted to make a difference, not just show up for work every day," Dr. Rosemurgy said in the report.

TGH spokesperson John Dunn said in the report, "People come and go from hospitals and programs all the time. But we have many surgeons here, and patient care and the services we offer have not been affected by their departure."
