CareFirst Blues Give $8.5M For Medical Homes at Safety Net Clinics

CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield — the private payor for Virginia, Maryland and Washingon, D.C. — is distributing more than $8.5 million to 12 regional safety net clinics to help develop patient-centered medical homes.

The funded clinics are in Maryland, Virginia and the District of Columbia, and are expected to treat up to 66,000 patients with chronic illnesses such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease and high blood pressure. The program will also focus on other medical issues, such as HIV-case management and services for homeless, minority and uninsured populations.

The Safety Net Health Center Patient-Centered Medical Home Initiative is the payor's largest focused funding effort to date.
