Trump, Brexit, the physician shortage: 7 top healthcare disruptors of the next decade

Healthcare is in an "era of uncertainty," according to healthcare research firm Kalorama Information. Based on detailed economic forecasts for the global healthcare market from 2017-27, Kalorama Information identified 27 factors that could upend the healthcare market over the next decade.

Here are seven of the top factors.

1. Trump administration. The administration aims to repeal the ACA and has plans to transform drug pricing and information technology, among other healthcare-related goals.

2. Brexit. Brexit will likely have a significant effect on European markets, where many major healthcare firms are located.

3. Incidence of disease and treatment. More patients are being diagnosed for disease and requiring treatment.

4. Mergers and acquisitions. The healthcare sector has seen high rates of mergers and acquisitions as firms seek to gain market share and expand their capabilities.

5. Out-of-pocket spending on healthcare. Out-of-pocket spending in the U.S. in particular continues to rise.

6. Physician shortage. The supply of physicians is considered a potential challenge as populations grow and age.

7. Gig economy. The increase in independent contractors means more workers are seeking insurance outside of employment.

"There's so many factors impacting markets right now that they need to be considered in a multivariate analysis," Bruce Carlson, publisher of Kalorama Information, said in a statement. "So once you are done with aging populations and emerging markets, you've got to price in reimbursement changes in developing markets. Once you've done that, you've got to consider new technologies."
