Raymond Perelman of UPenn med school dies at 101

Raymond Perelman, who built a fortune buying and selling factories and donated more than $300 million to the University of Pennsylvania medical school and other charities, died Jan. 15 at 101 years old, according to The Inquirer.

Five things to know about Mr. Perelman:

1. The son of a Lithuanian immigrant, Mr. Perelman worked to expand his father's factory business by adding plants outside of Pennsylvania, including in Greensboro, N.C.

2. He earned an MBA from The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia before serving as a flight officer in World War II.

3. Upon his return, Mr. Perelman became a partner in his father's company, which he later expanded into the steel business.

4. In 2011, Mr. Perelman and his wife donated $225 million to the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, which was later renamed in his honor. The university said the funds were used to speed up research, increase student aid and recruit faculty, according to the report.

5. The couple also gave $25 million to the health system's outpatient facility, which was renamed the Perelman Center for Advanced Medicine.
