Market Share of Chicago's Largest Hospital Systems Continues to Grow

The combined market share of the three largest health systems in the Chicago area — Oak Brook, Ill.-based Advocate Health Care, Mokena, Ill.-based Presence Health and Chicago-based Northwestern Memorial HealthCare — reached 32 percent in 2011 for inpatient admissions, up from 27 percent five years ago, according to a Crain's Chicago Business report.

Advocate has 15.7 percent of the Chicago area market, while Presence — formed in 2011 through the merger of Chicago's Resurrection Health Care and Mokena-based Provena Health System — has 10.3 percent. Northwestern has 5.7 percent of the market, according to the report.

The increased consolidation has some worried that the price of healthcare services in Chicago could rise due to increased bargaining power. A representative of Advocate, however, said consolidation helps to reduce costs and better coordinate care.
