Question: What do innovators/entrepreneurs from outside healthcare need to better understand about hospital and health system leaders?

Janice Nevin: We invite innovators to come find us – come learn with us. Let’s find solutions for health and wellbeing together.

As hospital and health system leaders, we are committed to improving health care for everyone in our communities. But we can’t do it alone. In order to continue providing excellent care at affordable costs, we must implement innovative approaches and forge meaningful partnerships that provide the best value – both in terms of actual cost, but more importantly, greater outcomes – for those we serve.

Q: Tell us about the last meaningful interaction you had with a patient.

JN: I had the privilege to talk with a patient at her bedside and she shared the highest compliment I could hear. Our caregivers made her feel loved. That is both very touching and very important. At Christiana Care, we serve together, guided by our values of excellence and love. When patients say we made them feel loved – and they often do – I know we have served them well.

Q: Can you share some praise with us about people you work with? What does greatness look like to you when it comes to your team?

JN: At Christiana Care, we call all of our employees caregivers. In every job, in every category and every level of our organization, each of our caregivers plays an integral role in our ability to best serve the people in our community, guided by our organization's values of excellence and love.

Every day our extraordinary caregivers find new ways to put our values into action. Sometimes they are simple acts – providing a warm blanket to a family member at a loved one’s bedside, or stopping by a patient’s room to say good night at the end of a shift. And sometimes they are momentous acts of courage and selflessness, as they care for patients and families struggling with the most deeply personal matters of life and death.

I am incredibly grateful to serve our community alongside the extraordinary caregivers of Christiana Care.
