Blount Hospital's First New CEO in 25 Years Faces Challenges

After a month as CEO of Blount Memorial Hospital in Maryville, Tenn., Don Heinemann is facing challenges from health reform, reimbursement cuts and competitive pressures, according to a Knoxville News Sentinel report.
Mr. Heinemann took over from longtime executive Joe Dawson, who retired from the CEO position on June 30 after 33 years working in various roles at the hospital. Mr. Heinemann was the first person Mr. Dawson hired when he was appointed CEO.

Blount Memorial totaled $169.2 million in net patient revenues in 2009 and saw more than 53,000 emergency room visits. The hospital is halfway through a three-year, $18 million EHR implementation.

According to the report, the hospital provides half its services on an outpatient basis and still does not offer open heart surgery, neurosurgery, trauma and pediatric and neonatal care. Mr. Heinemann said that despite the trends of hospital consolidation, Blount will stay independent as long as it remains fiscally strong.
