Tennessee's Vanderbilt University Medical Center Hires 5 Cardiologists From Rival Saint Thomas

Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tenn., has hired five cardiologists from rival Saint Thomas Heart in Franklin, Tenn., according to a Tennessean report.

Saint Thomas Heart, part of Nashville-based Saint Thomas Health, is losing Thomas Jantz, MD, Jerry Franklin, MD, Thomas Thompson, MD, Joel Phares, MD, and Sean Hughes, MD, to Vanderbilt Heart Franklin, one of VUMC's locations for cardiac care, on Jan. 1. An electrophysiologist who specializes in heart rhythm care also plans to join Vanderbilt in January, according to the report. These additions will more than double the current number of cardiologists with Vanderbilt Heart Franklin, bringing the total to 10.

Vanderbilt has already expanded its cardiology services by acquiring the five-physician practice South Central Heart Group from Columbia, Tenn., in May. In addition, Vanderbilt recently affiliated with Maury Regional Medical Center in Columbia, NorthCrest Medical Center in Springfield and Williamson Medical Center in Franklin, for services including cardiology.
