St. Joseph Hospital Opens Dick Butkus Heart and Vascular Screening Center

St. Joseph Hospital in Orange, Calif., recently held a grand opening celebration for its Dick Butkus Heart and Vascular Screening Center and Women's Heart Center.

NFL Hall of Famer Dick Butkus, who received coronary bypass surgery at St. Joseph Hospital a decade ago, was on hand for the event. Mr. Butkus received an electron beam computed tomography heart scan and coronary calcium scoring at the hospital and underwent immediate surgery after it was determined he had an alarming amount of calcium build-up in the walls of his coronary arteries.

Lawrence Santora, medical director of St. Joseph Hospital's Center for Heart and Vascular Wellness and Prevention, and Mr. Butkus are teaming up to increase awareness around the benefits of preventative heart screening. The two will host a segment for Yahoo Sports "Outside the Game" on preventive screenings, and the center is also partnering with the NFL Players Association to offer comprehensive screenings to retired NFL players in March 2013. In addition, the Butkus Foundation is funding free heart scans for a limited number of military veterans.
