Alabama's Crestwood, Huntsville Hospitals Continue Debate Over Angioplasty Plans

Crestwood Medical Center in Huntsville, Ala., is pointing to a recent study and revised guidelines from the American College of Cardiology to support its certificate of need request to offer angioplasty permanently even though it does not offer cardiac surgery, according to a Huntsville Times report.

A new study found similar outcomes for patients undergoing angioplasty at hospitals with and without heart surgery programs. In addition, the ACC released new guidelines on coronary revascularization treatment stating that hospitals without on-site cardiac surgery can offer angioplasty if they have done appropriate planning and program development.

Despite this support for Crestwood Medical Center's request, Huntsville (Ala.) Hospital is maintaining its opposition to the proposal, saying the ACC did not fully advocate for angioplasty at non-heart surgery hospitals and that the community does not have a need for an angioplasty program, according to the report. Huntsville Hospital offers both angioplasty and open-heart surgery.
