South Carolina's Bamberg County Hospital May Announce Layoffs

Bamberg (S.C.) County Hospital may be announcing another round of layoffs as hospital executives continue to restructure the fiscally strapped hospital, according to a Times and Democrat news report.

In June, the hospital's board voted to file for Chapter 9 bankruptcy protection for the hospital, which reported a $2.1 million year-to-date loss, according to the news report. In addition to employee layoffs, the hospital board also agreed to pay outstanding employee dental insurance claims and stop employee dental coverage entirely.

Meanwhile, the hospital is working with nearby Barnwell County and Allendale County hospitals to create Tri-County Regional Health System. The proposed health system would call for a new acute-care hospital and three multi-specialty ambulatory centers. Health Care Management Partners in New York City has been hired to manage the three hospitals and restructure their debts.
