Office of Personnel Management to Launch Reform-Mandated Database

The Office of Personnel Management will be creating a health claims database, which will be used to assess and track trends and costs related to healthcare based on medical claims submitted by healthcare providers for federal employees and other individuals covered by federal healthcare plans, according to a Government Health IT news report.

The database, mandated by the healthcare reform law, will be analyzed by OPM to help create methods for reducing health risks and improving clinical outcomes, track pharmacy pricing, initiate changes in healthcare programs and improve payor negotiations, according to the report.

Data will be collected from various programs, such as the Federal Employee Health Benefit Program, the National Pre-existing condition Insurance Program and the Multi-State Option Plan. OPM said it will protect the data by de-identifying personal information.
