Health IT officials, who believe the government's job is to lay a foundation for health IT innovation, are calling on the private sector to produce solutions and applications for some of the healthcare industry's toughest problems, including waste, according to an InformationWeek news report.
Thomas Tsang, MD, medical director for meaningful use and quality in the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology, said health IT should be focused on increasing efficiency, improving population health and driving down healthcare costs.
Several foundational initiatives established by federal health IT leaders include "open data" initiatives, which can pave the way for data analytics, and the Standards and Interoperability Framework, which aligns standards and best practices with the common goal of achieving interoperability, according to the news report.
