AHRQ: Hospitals Reporting Better Data Faster to Its Database

The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality has reported its databases now have more usable information due to increased state-level efforts to provide quality information in a more innovative and efficient manner, according to a Government Health IT news report.

AHRQ's "Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project" is a collection of hospital administrative data on hospital inpatient, emergency department and ambulatory surgery care. HCUP, which includes six separate databases, allows healthcare providers to search or download the administrative data from its website for research on various topics, including impact of healthcare policy changes and use and cost of healthcare, according to the report.

In one example, AHRQ Research Medical Officer Claudia Steiner, MD, says some states provided 2009 patient-identifiable data that was encrypted for privacy, allowing the reports to show when specific patients had to go back to the hospital for revisits and re-hospitalizations.
