National Coordinator for Health IT Announces Last Two Regional Extension Centers

National Coordinator for Health Information Technology David Blumenthal, MD, has announced the selection of the last two regional extension centers, finally completing a national system of 62 organizations that will help physicians and hospital adopt meaningful use electronic health records, according to a Department of Health & Human Services news release.

The organizations awarded include:

•    CalOptima Foundation, which will cover Orange County, Calif., and will receive approximately $4.6 million.
•    Massachusetts eHealth Collaborative, which will cover the state of New Hampshire and will receive approximately $5.1 million.

Dr. Blumenthal says the selection of the two organizations means that RECs are now in place in every region of the country. RECs were created last year under the HITECH portion of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 to provide technical assistance and support to healthcare providers switching from paper-based medical practice to EHRs.
