Want improved patient satisfaction and a healthier bottom line? There's a staffing model for that

With the shift to value-based care, it is vital hospitals implement approaches to staff scheduling that help them improve staff engagement, patient satisfaction and their bottom line.

Since the advent of the Affordable Care Act in 2010, hospitals across the nation have shifted to new payment models, implemented stringent expectations for quality and focused more on patient satisfaction. A key, sometimes overlooked, element of achieving the goals of health reform is staff management.

For example, overtime costs can take a major toll on an organization's finances and consequently, make it trying for a hospital to efficiently provide high-quality care. Additionally, frequent overtime shifts can have negative effects on employee and patient satisfaction.

It may be unrealistic to completely eliminate overtime, but hospitals can reduce it by implementing a more collaborative approach to staff scheduling. Under a Collaborative Staffing model, one way costs are reduced is by giving employees the ability to view open shifts that they are qualified to work across multiple units, and even facilities. This allows employees to voluntarily pick up an available shift, and eliminates the need for the hospital to incur costly overtime expenses.
