Financial challenges may force hospital ownership changes in Mississippi

New ownership could be possible for Greenwood (Miss.) Leflore Hospital and the Gautier, Miss.-based Singing River Health System, according to a July 31 report from The Meridian Star.

The city of Greenwood and Leflore County have placed jointly owned Greenwood Leflore Hospital up for bid, according to the report. Additionally, Jackson County supervisors will hold a public hearing on Aug. 17 regarding the county-owned Singing River Health Systems going up for bid.

Greenwood Leflore Hospital spokesperson Gary Marchland said the hospital was already losing millions of dollars before the COVID-19 pandemic. The hospital is likely to run out of cash as early as October.

"We entered the pandemic with $20 million in the bank. We are currently resting at around $5 million," Mr. Marchland told the newspaper.

The Sun-Herald reported on July 24 that Singing River Health System needs an infusion of $287 million in cash to cover costs over the next five years.

Both hospitals are the second largest employers in their counties.
