Alabama city proposes $300M project to relocate UAB hospital: 4 things to know

City officials in Hoover, Ala., proposed a $300 million project that would involve relocating the University of Alabama at Birmingham's Medical West hospital from Bessemer, Ala., to Hoover, according to a Hoover Sun report.

Here are four things to know:

1. The potential project is in the preliminary stages, with the city and UAB simply discussing the idea, according to the report, which cites "sources." No official agreement is in place.

2. However, if the project were to come to fruition, it is expected to require a $20 million investment from the city and bring more than 1,000 jobs to Hoover, the report states.

3. The 312-bed UAB Medical West hospital primarily serves patients of western Jefferson County.

4. Hospital CEO Keith Pennington reiterated in a statement to the Hoover Sun that the facility remains committed to that area no matter what the future holds.

"While we have made no secret of our long-term intention to construct a replacement hospital for the current Medical West facility, no decision has been reached on how, if, when or where that project might be undertaken," the statement reads. "We will continue to evaluate our plans for the future of Medical West so we can best fulfill our mission, which is to provide the highest quality care to all of our communities in a patient-focused environment."
