Kern Health Systems Board Members Split Over Resignation Decisions

Board members of Kern Health Systems in Bakersfield, Calif., are considering resignation following criticism over $70 million in agency reserves and a $42,000 raise for KHS CEO Carol Sorrel, according to an Eyewitness News report.

KHS serves as a health maintenance organization for Medi-Cal patients in California, according to the report. Several board members, including Gayland Smith and Estella Casas, have suggested that board members might resign following the community backlash. Ms. Casas announced she will resign at the board's monthly meeting on Thursday.

However, other board members say the criticism over Ms. Sorrel's salary raise is unwarranted. Board member Gordon Tanner said he will not resign "so that the board of supervisors can capriciously just decide to hire somebody to put on this board," according to the report.

At Thursday's board meeting, a lawyer representing the board members said no resolution could be passed forcing every member to resign. Most of the current board members' terms expire in June.
