24 health systems opening new hospitals in 2026

From rural replacement facilities to a $1.9 billion academic tower, health systems across the country are opening new hospitals in 2026. 

Here are 24 health systems that have opened or are set to open new hospitals this year, as reported by Becker’s:

1. Jackson, Tenn.-based West Tennessee Healthcare will open its new Bolivar (Tenn.) Hospital on Nov. 9.  The new facility will replace West Tennessee Healthcare Bolivar Hospital, which was built in 1974. It will have six inpatient beds and 12 emergency department rooms, up from nine emergency rooms at the current facility.

2. Bethlehem, Pa.-based St. Luke’s University Health Network plans to open its St. Luke’s Heart Hospital at Anderson Campus in Easton, Pa., in October. By both cost and square footage, it is the largest construction project in the system’s more than 150-year history. The $252 million, five-story, 355,000-square-foot facility adds 140 beds, which nearly doubles the campus’s size. It includes four dedicated heart operating rooms, a hybrid OR, 10 interventional suites and a cardiac ICU.

3. Vandalia Health’s $26 million Mon Harrison Neighborhood Hospital in Bridgeport, W.Va., began seeing patients Sept. 29. The two-story, roughly 38,000-square-foot facility expands emergency and inpatient care in Harrison County and is the Charleston, W.Va.-based system’s 18th hospital.

4. Aspirus Chippewa Falls (Wis.) Hospital and Clinic began seeing patients on Sept. 22. The hospital — Wausau, Wis.-based Aspirus Health’s 19th — expands access to inpatient and outpatient services in a region affected by two hospital closures in 2024. 

5. Florence, S.C.-based McLeod Health held an Aug. 27 ribbon cutting for its new $90 million McLeod Health Carolina Forest Hospital in Myrtle Beach, S.C. The four-story, 48-bed hospital will offer inpatient care, 24/7 emergency services and radiology services. It is the first new hospital in Horry County, S.C., since McLeod Health Seacoast in Little River, S.C., opened in 2011. 

6. Marietta, Ga.-based Wellstar Health System’s Wellstar Columbia County Medical Center in Grovetown, Ga., began receiving patients Aug. 26. It is the first dedicated hospital in Columbia County and opened more than 12 years after Augusta University first sought state approval to build it. The $378 million, 100-bed hospital includes six operating rooms, catheterization labs and acuity-adaptable rooms that can function as ICU rooms. 

7. Batesville, Ind.-based Margaret Mary Health opened its new hospital Aug. 8. The $115 million, 124,000-square-foot facility replaces a hospital that served the community for more than 90 years. It is the first phase of a larger health and wellness campus. It is also Indiana’s first all-electric hospital.

8. Orlando Health Watson Clinic Lakeland Highlands Hospital opened to patients July 8 in Lakeland, Fla. The seven-story, 558,233-square-foot hospital has 306 patient beds and 49 emergency beds and represents an investment of more than $500 million. It is the first new hospital to open in Lakeland in more than a century.

9. Ascension Seton Women’s Hospital in Austin, Texas, welcomed its first patients June 29. The $362 million, 326,000-square-foot facility has 178 beds. It offers Level IV maternal care for high-risk pregnancies and an 84-room NICU staffed by Dell Children’s neonatologists. 

10. Wilmington, Del.-based ChristianaCare opened its ChristianaCare Hospital, Aston Township, Pa., campus on June 2.The neighborhood hospital — ChristianaCare’s second — is expected to provide care to approximately 15,000 patients annually, along with 24/7 emergency care, 10 beds for patients needing inpatient or observation care, inpatient services, imaging, laboratory services and virtual specialty consultations. 

11. King of Prussia, Pa.-based Universal Health Services began patient care May 19 at its $430 million Alan B. Miller Medical Center in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. The seven-story, 156-bed hospital spans 365,000 square feet on a 34-acre campus. It is the first new full-service hospital in northern Palm Beach County since 1979.

12. Tacoma, Wash.-based MultiCare opened its $479 million Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital May 16 and moved 61 patients from MultiCare Tacoma General Hospital. The six-story, 250,000-square-foot facility has 82 inpatient beds and eight operating rooms.

13. Nashville, Tenn.-based HCA Healthcare opened its $235 million HCA Florida Gainesville Hospital May 5. The 90-bed hospital is the first to open in the region in more than 50 years and includes a 30-bed inpatient rehabilitation unit. 

14. Livonia, Mich.-based Trinity Health opened a $226 million replacement hospital in Brighton, Mich., on April 19. The move relocated Trinity Health Livingston Hospital from Howell, about eight miles away. The four-story, 174,000-square-foot hospital has 56 acuity-adaptable beds, and the system plans to add 24 more.

15. York, Pa.-based WellSpan Health opened two microhospitals in March, both with an emergency department and 10 inpatient beds: WellSpan Newberry Hospital on March 10 and WellSpan Shrewsbury Hospital on March 24. The system opened another microhospital in Carlisle, Pa., on May 5. The Carlisle-based hospital also features an emergency department and 10 inpatient beds. 

16. Moses Lake, Wash.-based Samaritan began treating patients March 7 at its new $225 million hospital. The three-story replacement facility sits on a 55-acre campus. It replaces a 50-bed building constructed in 1955.

17. Marshfield Medical Center-Wisconsin Rapids Campus opened to patients March 1 as the 13th hospital within Marshfield Clinic, which is part of Sioux Falls, S.D.-based Sanford Health. The hospital includes inpatient beds, an emergency department and imaging services. 

18. Columbus-based The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center opened its $1.9 billion University Hospital Feb. 23. The 26-story hospital has 820 private rooms, 24 operating rooms and 234 ICU beds. The hospital is staffed by 12,000 providers and support staff provides care for a range of specialties, including surgery, neurology, neurosurgery, critical care, adult organ transplants and cancer care. 

19. Irving, Texas-based Christus Health opened a $30 million, 30,000-square-foot hospital in Palestine, Texas, on Jan. 29. The facility has 10 inpatient beds and a 15-bed emergency department.

20. Allentown, Pa.-based Lehigh Valley Health Network, part of Philadelphia-based Jefferson Health, opened its third neighborhood hospital, Lehigh Valley Hospital-Pocono Creek, in Bartonsville, Pa., on Jan. 28. It is the system’s first neighborhood hospital in the Poconos. 

21. Menomonee Falls, Wis.-based Froedtert ThedaCare opened its $84 million ThedaCare Medical Center – Oshkosh (Wis.) on Jan. 19. The 114,000-square-foot facility comprises 24/7 emergency care, inpatient care, outpatient surgery, primary care, pediatrics, specialty care, a drive-thru retail pharmacy and imaging services including CT and X-ray.   

22. Houston-based Townsen Memorial Health System opened its second hospital, the $30 million Townsen Memorial Hospital-West, on Jan. 15. The hospital has 13 inpatient beds, six operating rooms and a cardiac catheterization lab.

23. Chicago-based CommonSpirit opened the 135,000-square-foot Memorial Hospital-North Georgia in Ringgold on Jan. 11. The 135,000-square-foot hospital includes 64 inpatient beds, five operating rooms, two endoscopy suites and a 24-bed emergency department. The hospital aims to keep more patients in North Georgia instead of seeking care across the state line in Tennessee.  

24. Newport News, Va.-based Riverside Health System on Jan. 6 opened Riverside Smithfield (Va.) Hospital — its fifth acute care hospital and the first for Isle of Wight County and surrounding communities. The $300 million, 200,000-square-foot hospital includes 50 inpatient beds, a 24/7 full-service emergency department, advanced surgical suites, an intensive care unit, diagnostic imaging services and a medical/surgical unit.
