York, Pa.-based WellSpan Health opened WellSpan Newberry Hospital in Newberry Township, Pa., on March 10, expanding the system’s footprint in central Pennsylvania.

Five notes:

1. The microhospital is the system’s 10th hospital across Central Pennsylvania and Northern Maryland, according to a March 10 health system news release.

2. WellSpan Newberry Hospital has an emergency department and 10 inpatient beds. The facility is intended to expand access to emergency care for residents who previously traveled elsewhere for services.

3. The opening is part of WellSpan’s plan to launch three microhospitals in early 2026 designed to provide rapid patient assessment and shorter wait times. The system also plans to open additional facilities near Shrewsbury, Pa., and Carlisle, Pa., in March and April.

4. WellSpan and microhospital developer Emerus broke ground on WellSpan Newberry Hospital in July 2024.

5. In March 2025, Dan Hernandez was named CEO of the Emerus WellSpan Health Market, which includes the three microhospitals.
