New York man enter guilty plea for attacking former Northwell Health hospital boss with metal bat

Leon Morris, 56, accepted a plea deal in state supreme court Friday to satisfy felony counts of attempted first-degree assault and second-degree assault, among other criminal charges, for attacking his former supervisor at Staten Island (N.Y.) University Hospital — a Great Neck, N.Y.-based Northwell Health facility — with a metal bat earlier this year, according to Silive.com.

The plea deal satisfies all charges against Mr. Morris. However, he will face 42 months in prison and will be sentenced to two years' post-release supervision Jan. 4.

The charges relate to a March 12 incident in which Mr. Morris hid a baseball bat and knife underneath his jacket and proceeded to assault Giovanna Palumbo around 5 p.m. on the second floor of the hospital, the report states.

During a prior hearing in March, Mr. Morris' attorney said a "psychiatric episode" triggered Mr. Morris to allegedly attack the victim.

However, an assistant district attorney said during the March hearing Mr. Morris attacked Ms. Palumbo to "exact revenge" on her because he "mistakenly" believed she caused him to be fired from the facility, according to the report.

The district attorney said during the prior hearing Mr. Morris hit Ms. Palumbo with the bat multiple times and threatened her and other coworkers with the knife.

In addition to the first- and second-degree assault counts, Mr. Morris was also charged with misdemeanor counts of criminal weapon possession and menacing, and harassment, the report states.

Without the plea deal, Mr. Morris would have faced up to 15 years in prison, according to the report.
