New York AG Reinforces Religious Accommodation at City Hospitals

The New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation has reached a settlement with New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman to better secure employees' rights to religious accommodations.

The settlement stems from the AG's formal investigation into religious observance practices at HHC facilities and Jacobi Medical Center, specifically. Details on violations, if any, were not disclosed.

Under the settlement, all facilities within the HHC network must implement a uniform policy on the review and granting of religious accommodations requests, conduct regular training on that policy and the law, and develop an internal complaint system.

Mr. Schneiderman launched the Religious Rights Initiative in November 2011, which is dedicated to combating religious discrimination, investigating religious freedom violations and ensuring that anti-discrimination laws are aggressively enforced.
