Bergen Regional Medical Center in NJ Allegedly Defrauded County With Elevator Repairs

The private operator of Bergen Regional Medical Center in Paramus, N.J., allegedly defrauded a county agency through a scheme with two elevator repair companies, according to a Record report.

The Bergen County Improvement Authority claims the hospital's management company, Bergen Regional Medical Center LP, conspired with two elevator repair companies to bilk the county of "at least hundreds of thousands of dollars," according to the general counsel for BCIA.

The suit claims at least one elevator was never repaired and remained out of order for several years. Court papers also say the county discovered elevator equipment that should have been installed in 2007, but instead was found on a hospital loading dock.

A spokesperson for Bergen Regional Medical Center LP said the allegations are false and that the company intends to vigorously defend itself.

The former executive director of the BCIA and his assistant were also named in the suit for allegedly signing off on paperwork that allowed the hospital to double-bill the agency for a series of repairs.
