Petoskey-based Northern Michigan Regional Health System is considering affiliating with another health system, according to a Petoskey News-Review report.

Northern Michigan Regional Health System's goals for the affiliation include improved borrowing power and access to capital, economies of scale for purchasing, shared clinical knowledge, greater efficiencies and increased access to care, according to the report.

Northern Michigan Regional Health System is looking at both non-profit and for-profit organizations and mid- and large-size organizations, including Munson Medical Center in Traverse City, Mich.; Superior Health Partners, which was recently created by Bell Hospital in Ishpeming, Mich., and Marquette (Mich.) General Hospital; Novi, Mich.-based Trinity Health System; Flint, Mich.-based McLaren Health Care; and Plano, Texas-based Legacy Health Partners.

Northern Michigan Regional Health System's exploration of affiliates comes nearly a year after affiliation negotiations with Grand Rapids, Mich.-based Spectrum Health System fell through. The system plans to identify and resolve potential roadblocks to negotiations prior to performing due diligence, a precaution that was not taken when working with Spectrum Health.
