2-hour standoff ensues with armed patient at Florida hospital

A patient wielding a knife surrendered to police after barricading himself inside Fort Lauderdale, Fla.-based Broward Health Medical Center for two hours Wednesday evening, according to News-7 Miami.

Police responded to a call at the hospital around 4:45 p.m. following reports a 38-year-old patient with a knife had threatened to hurt himself and barricaded himself inside a room on the fifth floor of the facility, according to the report.

Police and a SWAT team arrived to negotiate with the unidentified patient and evacuated the fifth floor. A witness told police the individual's mother, along with crisis negotiators, attempted to negotiate with the patient.

The patient, who suffered superficial injuries during the incident, peacefully surrendered after two hours of negotiating. Police detained him around 7 p.m. and took him in for a psychiatric evaluation, according to the report.
