Cook County Health in Illinois Far From Reaching Nearly 600 Anticipated Layoffs

Although Illinois' Cook County Health and Hospitals System's independent government board anticipated 593 layoffs, only 188 employees have been laid off so far, according to a Chicago Tribune report.

The independent board was taken aback by the huge disparity, stating it had expected just a slight decrease from the projected layoff count after moving laid-off employees to vacant positions within the health system. However, Cook County President Toni Preckwinkle has hinted that more layoffs will be announced in the future.

Cook County is working to fill a gaping $315 million budget shortfall. The health system has been targeted for most of the county's spending cuts.

As county leaders finalize a proposal for next year's spending plan, Ms. Preckwinkle and the health system are still negotiating the amount of tax subsidies that will go to the health system. According to the report, Cook County Health has asked for $327.6 million in tax subsidies, while Ms. Preckwinkle wants to limit that to $243 million.
