Washington legislature approves measure requiring insurers to cover abortions

The Washington Senate passed a measure March 3 that requires any insurer covering maternity care to also cover abortions, according to The Hill.

The Senate passed the bill 27 votes to 22, while the state House passed parallel legislation of its own. The bill also requires plans renewed or issued after Jan. 1, 2019 to provide deductible-free coverage for contraceptives.

"No woman should have to seek or pay for an additional rider or copay or have any other means of delay or financial burden for this coverage," state Sen. Steve Hobbs, D-Lake Stevens, the bill's co-sponsor, told The Seattle Times in January.
