Trump picks UChicago healthcare expert for White House economist post  

President Donald Trump appointed University of Chicago professor Tomas Philipson, PhD, as acting chair of the White House Council of Economic Advisers after the departure of economist Kevin Hassett, PhD, NPR reports.

Dr. Philipson is the Daniel Levin Chair in Public Policy at the University of Chicago and is considered an expert in healthcare economics. He previously served as an economic adviser to the FDA and CMS, according to the report. At CMS he helped develop Medicare Advantage. 

Dr. Hassett told NPR he is leaving on good terms and that economists typically spend two years on the council.
