Mayo Clinic's 4 pillars to tackle diversity issues

Rochester, Minn.-based Mayo Clinic is taking a comprehensive workplace development approach to address diversity, equity and inclusion issues in healthcare, according to Anjali Bhagra, MD, medical director for Mayo's Office of Equity, Inclusion and Diversity.

In an Oct. 26 news release, Mayo said Dr. Bhagra will deploy the "RISE" approach she helped develop, which consists of four pillars: respect, inspire, strengthen and empower.

The pillars involve "reflection in current experiences, strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats to develop better emotional intelligence, awareness and regulation," according to Mayo. They also involve inspiration from those of diverse backgrounds, fields and career stages, as well as "strengthening skills in collaborative negotiation and executive presence" and "empowerment through accessing existing tools, timely resources and strategies."

Dr. Bhagra is slated to discuss the pillars during a conference and continuing education course that she is co-directing in November with Cathy Fraser, Mayo's chief human resources officer.

"As someone who believes that empowered belonging should be the hallmark of every work environment and that all voices and perspectives should be heard and honored, I'm so excited to present RISE for Equity: Reflect, Inspire, Strengthen & Empower 2021," Dr. Bhagra said in the news release. "Using the RISE pillars, we will lean into the discomfort surrounding equity, inclusion and diversity challenges; hear from experts in different industries; cross-pollinate ideas across the healthcare industry; and discuss innovation, strategies and emerging trends."
