Brigham and Women's Staffing Consultant Shares Hiring Tips

The lead staffing consultant for Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston recently shared the traits, skills and personality characteristics he keeps an eye out for when hiring, according to a Boston Globe report.

Ryan Lavoie said the hardest positions to fill at Brigham and Women's are those requiring the most specialized experience, such as occupational therapists, operating room nurses and speech pathologists. Experience is the most desirable qualification, but activity that shows initiative is meaningful as well. For instance, he seeks administrators who have stuck with jobs for two or three years at a time since that shows they're serious about their career.

Mr. Lavoie also said background in the healthcare industry is not absolutely mandatory for employment at Brigham and Women's. "Bringing in someone who has a completely fresh approach is something we do all the time, especially on the administrative side," Mr. Lavoie said in the report.

Mr. Lavoie also noted that the hospital has done a considerable amount of hiring through LinkedIn, the business networking website. In fact, that is how he found his current job at the hospital.
