Question: What tools do hospitals and health systems need to maintain telemedicine growth post-pandemic?

Judd Hollander: The most important thing is to have an easy to use platform that is integrated into the electronic medical record.

Q: What do clinicians want most from their telemedicine platforms?

JH: This is really simple. Clinicians just want it to work easily. No clinician wants to spend time doing tech support during the visit. It is simply, can I hear and see the patient and can they hear and see me? The rest is medicine.

Q: Where is the biggest opportunity for telemedicine and how can hospitals and health systems best take advantage of it?

JH: Telemedicine, when done well, provides convenience and increased access for patients and facilitates efficiency on the clinician side. But, telemedicine is just a health care delivery model, so hospitals and health systems need to determine their unmet needs and decide whether (or how) specific uses of telemedicine can help them solve those needs.

Q: How can providers better navigate the digital divide to help vulnerable patient populations participate in virtual care?

JH: I do not believe the digital divide makes healthcare worse. Patients without digital access don't lose further access to in-person care, and for many patients, digital health improves access. Healthcare disparities are much more driven by lack of insurance than by lack of a smartphone, computer, or broadband. But, let's hope we can get all of those things for our patients.
