Question: What do innovators/entrepreneurs from outside healthcare need to understand about hospital and health system leaders?

Ron Stiver: What’s at stake. We’re dealing with people’s lives. As such, there can be no compromising on mission as we collectively strive to implement innovative and sustainable solutions that deliver the triple aim—better health, better care, better value.

Q: Healthcare takes a lot of heat for not innovating quickly. What’s your take on this?

RS: Traditionally, innovation has led to improved quality and/or reduced costs for the consumer. Judged by this, I think our industry can and should do better. With such broad-based tools and capabilities as AI, advanced data analytics and virtual care, we’re on the cusp of delivering a steady stream of innovation that can make a meaningful impact.

Q: Can you share some praise with us about people you work with? What does greatness look like to you when it comes to your team?

RS: I’m continually humbled by the team I work with. They embrace our values—purpose, excellence, compassion and team—in all that they do. I’m not only proud of the work that they do, but the way in which they do it.
