Question: What unfolded the last time your organization responded to concerns or needs expressed by physicians?

Murali Minnah: As a product company, our everyday focus is to ensure that physician challenges with knowledge extraction from unstructured clinical data are addressed in an efficient automated fashion. Recently, working with our physician partner we uncovered the intense manual effort that was undertaken in stroke monitoring and reporting for in-patients. With the help of clinical natural language processing and predictive analytics, we successfully automated the process and eliminated subjectivity from manual review by clinical experts, thereby improving the productivity of the center and improving the accuracy of reporting.

Q: How do you define patient engagement?

MM: I define patient engagement as the omni-channel relationship of the patient with the health system. It is a continuous data-driven engagement that requires investments from a health system to understand the patient touch points with various stakeholders and to effectively create a bi-directional communication hub for a personalized interaction. The patient engagement should be seen as a continuous process and must be data-driven for it to be successful.

Q: As a leader, what is the best investment you made in your own professional development in the past five years?

MM: I have become a firm believer in the merits of surrounding myself with incredibly smart and grounded colleagues. I can attribute a great deal of personal growth and learning to the relationships that I have developed over the last couple of years. It is definitely hard to quantify the investment, but it is definitely something you will cherish for a very long time and you will benefit from the collective wisdom of the group.
