Question: What are your top priorities for 2022?

Dennis Delisle: COVID has presented significant challenges to the healthcare industry, impacting short- and longer-term staffing as well as financial outcomes. With national shortages in clinical and support service roles, we are prioritizing ways to build talent pipelines to fill the essential roles needed to deliver high-quality, safe care and facilitate strategic growth.

Q: What will the lasting legacy of COVID-19 be on the healthcare system?

DD: I think we have yet to see what the longer-term impact will be. For one, the staffing crisis highlights the need to evolve our care delivery model to our reality. If the nurse staffing crisis persists, what does that mean for how we staff our inpatient units, operating rooms, and other clinical areas? A silver-lining in my experience over the past 2 years is the clear commitment of interprofessional teams and leaders required to persist through these challenges and thrive in the future. We can go father together than apart.

Q: What advice do you have for emerging healthcare leaders today?

DD: Healthcare is about people caring for people. Throughout the pandemic our staff experience significant stress, exhaustion, burnout, grief, and everything in between. As a leader, it is critical to invest in your people from wellness to career development. The best organizational strategies will never achieve their potential without engaged and talented people working together in high-performing teams. Don’t lose sight of the importance of relationships and team dynamics. Be generous in praise and appreciation.
