Question: What's one lesson you learned early in your career that has helped you lead in healthcare?

Par Bolina: Ensure we retain a sharp focus on the patient and caregiver experience otherwise many well-intentioned changes lead to suboptimal outcomes.

Q: Where do you go for inspiration and fresh ideas?

PB: Reading biographies and autobiographies remains my most reliable source of inspiration. While a lifelong sense of curiosity, creativity and laziness contribute to most of my ideas.

Q: What do you see as the most exciting opportunity in healthcare right now?

PB: More effectively understanding and evaluating the effectiveness of physicians. I believe it may lead to us rethinking and perhaps redesigning the role and training of physicians.

Q: Healthcare has had calls for disruption, innovation, and transformation for years now. Do you feel we are seeing that change? Why or why not?

PB: While financial and technologic realities will continue to challenge the status quo, effective adaptation and transformation will most likely continue to be hindered by our present model of healthcare delivery that relies too much on the brute effort of overwhelmed clinicians led by anosognosiatic administrative leaders. It isn’t necessarily because it is the wrong kind of disruption or innovation, rather the recipients are ill-equipped and unprepared to adapt to change.
