4 ways leaders can turn fears into fuel for success

Fear is a natural part of life, and leaders can either be overcome by the feeling and rendered ineffective or they can use fear to help strive for greatness, according to the Harvard Business Review.

Here are four steps every leader can take to help turn their fears into motivation.\

1. Leaders should acknowledge their fear, because ignoring the feeling does not allow them to examine it and take advantage of it.

2. They should examine the emotions surrounding their fear and the potential reasons it exists. Are high expectations or the potential of failure at the root of the fear? Leaders should take the time to interrogate themselves and try to understand the ways their fears affect their work performance.

3. Leaders should choose a different course of action and set tangible goals. They should evaluate the ways their actions have lined up with their goals and values, and if they find that their fears have led them off course, they should make a plan that sets them back on track.

4. Last, leaders must do the hard work and follow through on each commitment. Leaders should return to their action plans regularly to remind themselves of the goals they set.
