4 lessons all executives can learn from recommendations to Uber

Uber has been the subject of vast criticism recently for its toxic culture, including issues ranging from sexual harassment to discrimination. The ride-hailing app's problems prompted an internal review from former U.S Attorney General Eric Holder's law firm, and Mr. Holder came back with a comprehensive list of recommendations for improvement.

Below is a list of four lessons every executive can take away from Mr. Holder’s recommendations to the company’s leadership.

  1. Executive accountability and board oversight are important not only to increase productivity for company leaders, but to establish trust within an organization.
  2. A cohesive company culture that highlights positive and inclusive action from the top down will set an example and encourage employees to hold each other accountable to a common standard.
  3. A standardized complaint process is vital to make employees feel protected and confident reporting any misconduct.
  4. Limiting the alcohol budget for work events and after-hours meetings can cut down on the amount of alcohol-fueled misconduct and also create safe spaces for employees who do not feel comfortable with excessive alcohol consumption.
