4 Democratic presidential candidates back Kaiser workers in strike

Four Democrats running for president in 2020 are taking sides in a labor dispute at Oakland, Calif.-based Kaiser Permanente.

Kaiser Permanente could soon face the largest walkout since 1997, when over 185,000 UPS workers went on strike. More than 85,000 employees of the nonprofit health system are planning to strike if Kaiser does not negotiate in good faith, according to the Coalition of Kaiser Permanente Unions, which includes 11 labor unions across seven states and the District of Columbia. The workers want safe staffing levels and better wages and benefits, among other issues.

The candidates who voiced support for the workers are U.S. Sens. Kamala Harris, D-Calif., Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., and Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., and Rep. Beto O'Rourke, D-Texas.
