Rex Healthcare to Move Forward With Heart Center Plans Despite WakeMed Objections

Rex Healthcare in Raleigh, N.C., has received approval from the North Carolina Court of Appeals for its plans to build a heart center on the Rex Hospital campus in Raleigh despite objections from WakeMed Health & Hospitals, also based in Raleigh, according to a News Observer report.

The new heart center would consolidate services offered at seven locations by Rex Healthcare. The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services approved the project in 2010, but WakeMed, which operates a heart center that has long been the only one in Raleigh, filed multiple appeals seeking to have the approval revoked.

WakeMed argues that a new heart center would be an unnecessary duplication of services that would raise healthcare costs, according to the report.

WakeMed could still appeal the case to the state Supreme Court or file other petitions. Stan Taylor, vice president of corporate planning at WakeMed, told the News Observer that the next step for WakeMed on this issue hasn't been decided.
