Surescripts Named Temporary EHR Certification Body by ONC

Surescripts, a provider of e-prescription services, has been named an Authorized Temporary Certification Body of electronic health records by the Office of the National Coordinator, according to a Government Health IT news report.

As an ONC-ATCB, Surescripts is authorized to test and certify EHRs for compliance with standards and certification criteria set by the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services earlier this year. Certification by ONC-ATCBs ensures EHR products will support healthcare providers' goal of achieving meaningful use. Other ONC-ATCB's authorized to certify complete EHRs and EHR modules include CCHIT, ICSA Labs, SLI Global Solutions, Drummond Group and InfoGard Labs.

However, Surescripts is a temporary program, meaning its status as a certification body expires in Dec. 2011. It is also not able to certify complete EHRs but can certify EHR modules.
