Study: Majority of Providers Confused by Ambulatory EHR Certification

A study by consulting firm CapSite, based in Burlington, Vt., reported 69 percent of healthcare providers are unaware that there will be alternatives to the Certification Commission for Health Information Technology for certifying ambulatory EHR systems, according to the CapSite report.

"2010 U.S. Ambulatory EHR Certification Survey" showed widespread confusion on several topics relating to ambulatory EHR certification. Fifty-two percent of the 850 providers surveyed said they think CCHIT certification is a prerequisite for receiving incentive payments for meaningful use, when in fact, the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology will dispatch testing and certification bodies to certify EHR on behalf of vendors.

Fifty-two percent of respondents said they were unsure if they would purchase an EHR certified by a federally accredited organization other than CCHIT, a response that CapSite said is in line with the current level of confusion surrounding certification.
