Health IT Ranks as Top Career Option for College Grads

Health information technology tops the list of hottest career options for college graduates, according to research published by the University of California-San Diego Extension.

The main drivers behind the growth and demand for health IT professionals are federal initiatives that, for now, incentivize healthcare providers to switch to electronic health records and become meaningful users of health IT. According to UCSD's research, various technical roles are needed to achieve federal goals, including healthcare integration engineers, healthcare systems analysts, clinical IT consultants and technology support specialists.

Data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics show jobs in the health IT sector are expected to grow 20 percent from 2008-2018, representing approximately 35,100 new jobs for that 10-year span.
