FDA Plans to Create 5-Year IT Strategic Plan

The Food and Drug Administration is putting forth more effort to prioritize health information technology as part of its five-year strategic plan, according to an Information Week news report.

In addition to the recently released draft of its strategic plan, the FDA is currently working to release a five-year information technology strategic plan to support the agency's public health activities, according to the report.

Among some of its IT plans, the FDA hopes to modernize its IT infrastructure to increase innovation and collaboration with other federal and global agencies and maintain an IT infrastructure that is compliant with federal laws and regulations for security, privacy and confidentiality.

The FDA is also adopting is its Analytical Tools Initiative, which was created to build new technologies to provide quicker analysis of food and drugs already in the field and in laboratory testing, according to the report.
