CMS Releases Details of Computer System Upgrades

In accordance with mandates outlined in the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services has released its plan to upgrade its current computer and data systems to make data available to healthcare providers and suppliers in a timely and reliable manner, according to a Healthcare IT News report.

CMS' IT modernization will lead to improved business operations, effective performance measurement and oversight, enhanced public accountability and innovation. CMS also expects to generate significant cost savings through its IT modernization, according to the report.

Part of CMS' work plan to upgrade its computer and data systems includes the Health Care Data Improvement Initiative, with the primary goal being to transform CMS computer systems and data to support the national health agenda and enable successful implementation of the Affordable Care Act. Other initiatives include the Enterprise Data Environment, through which CMS will move toward consolidating agency data to create more complete, timely and synchronized data.
